Must Haves When Building A Custom Home
Just because you are building a custom home does not guarantee that you will get the design right. There are features that every custom home should have in order to satisfy you after it’s built. I will simply call these ‘must haves’ when building a custom home. It’s also important that these ‘must haves’ not be looked at in terms of being luxury items. They are simply features or conveniences that should be included in every custom home to make it a little nicer and a little more livable. Here is what I consider to be must have custom built home features.
Smart/Centrally Controlled Lighting
People are keenly aware these days that smart thermostats are must haves when building a custom home but they often forget to add smart lighting to that list. Centrally controlled lighting makes it easier to control when exterior safety and security lighting comes on, what time an individual interior room’s lighting goes on and off, and it can even shut lights down for longer periods in unused rooms.
Tankless Water Heaters
Here is another custom-built home feature that saves energy and makes for a lot of convenience. Nowadays it’s very easy and inexpensive to incorporate on-demand hot water systems into your home’s heating system. You can even install these as stand-alone water heaters too. They save money because you are not constantly keeping the water in your hot-water tank heated. When you need hot water your furnace simply turns on for the amount of time the hot water switch is on. It’s convenient because you never have to worry about running out of hot water when several people in your home shower at the same time.
Laundry Chutes or Second Story Laundry Rooms
It is amazing that more people do not put their laundry rooms on the second floor. After all, the vast majority of dirty laundry that’s generated in a home comes from second-floor bedrooms. Why make so many trips up and down the stairs to the laundry room if you don’t have to. At least add a laundry chute to your new custom home if you insist on having a first-floor laundry. You will be pleasantly surprised by how much aggravation and effort these can save you after your new custom home is built.
Another one of the must haves when building a custom home is having a walk-in pantry. How many times in your life have you had to shuffle items around in your cupboards to find another item you are looking for. The answer to this is probably too many to count. If you have a walk-in pantry it provides much easier access to canned goods, boxed goods, paper goods, and more. These can be added to a new home design for just a little bit extra cost.
Sun Tunnels and Skylights
Most people are really into looking for ways to save money when they are building a new custom home and this is a great way to do that. When your new custom home is being built make sure to add some skylights and sun tunnels into your upper floor rooms and to supply natural light to the common areas of your new home too. This will not only save you money on your electric bill, but it will also brighten up your home with some easy on the eyes natural lighting.
Don’t Forget the Outside
This is one of the biggest mistakes people make when designing a custom home. That’s why it made our list of must haves when building a custom home. Too many times people neglect making plans for the outside of their custom home they are about to build. This is a mistake because features such as swimming pools, outdoor living spaces, patio sitting areas, decks, and gardens work much better when they are incorporated into a custom home design from the beginning.
